Brief: To design a multi-utility space based on the emerging patterns within the city. 

Concept: A chawl is a dense space with many dwelling units which accommodates its users throughout their lifetime. There is a constant demand to expand the space within the chawl. 

The idea of the design revolves around the ever-growing pressure formed inside the chawl of a dwelling unit and how the pressure is constantly being channelized throughout the day. This pressure is with respect to various forms; within the dwelling unit, unit to the corridor, corridor to the courtyard and within the courtyard. 

Case study : 

Studying different types of chawls across Mumbai to observe and analyze the activities taken place throughout the day.

Case study : 

Analyzing how the volumes are being encroached and changed throughout the day.

Graphically depicting how a chawl unit tends to expand/encroach volumes into all possible directions.

Studying the unit's various pressure zones and how the pressure moves from point A to B in terms of use of space and how vertex formation takes place. Results provide the dead and the active space in a dwelling unit.

Site selection :

The selected site is one of the largest existing chawl building which has now become obsolete due to the poor maintenance and the condition of the structure. Being located in the busiest area of South Bombay, the site offers the need to create [rogramme which the surrounding lacks. Thus, taking all the needs of the users into consideration, programs have been developed and similarly, the site has been addressed.

The intervention has been created to attract the users from the surrounding area by offering them their need by providing various interactive programs and thus the pull has been created. The pressure zones have been created to funnel the users as per the volume. The user always has an alternative to diverge into another space if the current space gets densely packed and thus with the users being channelized the volumes start behaving in a dynamic manner.
